Growing Up Surrounded by Music in Jammu and Kashmir
Growing up in Jammu and Kashmir, music was an integral part of my life. From the traditional folk-style of singing to the modern fusion of pop, rock, and jazz, I was surrounded by inspirational forms of music every day. This rich culture for music inspired me to pick up the guitar and understand more about the combination of sounds and textures.
I began taking lessons with some of the best musicians in Jammu and Kashmir in order to gain a deeper appreciation for how sounds can be manipulated to create something truly beautiful. I practiced playing different scales, melodies, chord progressions, and scale patterns until I became comfortable enough with them that I could play them from memory. As I continued to get better at my craft, I even started playing gigs at some local venues in order to gain recognition for my work.
Pursuing a Bachelor’s in Music at the University of Jammu
My journey to becoming a musical artist began while I was a student at the University of Jammu. Music had always been an important part of my life, but it was at the university that I pursued my bachelor’s in music and truly began to understand the art and craft of music. During my studies, I started to appreciate the depth and nuances of various musical genres, while also understanding the importance of technique and discipline in mastering music. Through practice and dedication, I was able to hone my skills in music theory, composition, songwriting, performance, improvisation, sound production, and software engineering.
I soon realized that having a professional background in music would be enormously beneficial for me as an artist. The lessons I learned from academic classes laid the foundation for me to become a successful musician. My years at college taught me invaluable techniques for creating meaningful music that resonates with an audience. These lessons allowed me to craft songs with thought-provoking lyrics that evoke emotion from listeners. Additionally, these classes provided me with invaluable connections in the music industry which were incredibly helpful when it came time for me to start promoting myself as an artist.
Learning to Play Various Instruments From a Young Age
My love for music started when I was a young child, and I would spend all my free time playing various instruments. From my dad’s old harmonium to the classical guitar, he bought me, I learned how to play each instrument by watching videos on YouTube and then practicing for hours on end. I also took regular music classes at school, which helped me refine my musical ear.
By the time I was 17, I got a Stage name “Aamir Naik” I was proficient in playing multiple instruments. By this point, I had mastered the technique of playing drums, guitar, harmonium and tabla—allowing me to compose music for different genres. My ability to switch between different instruments allowed me to explore new styles of music and create unique compositions that blended western and eastern sounds into something completely my own.
I also developed an affinity for electronic music production which enabled me to take advantage of modern technology in order create dynamic musical compositions with multiple layers using digital audio workstations like Ableton Live or Logic Pro X. This opened up a world of possibilities for me as a musician and allowed me to experiment with sounds in ways that weren’t possible before.
Struggles of Making It as an Artist in Jammu and Kashmir
My journey as a musician in Jammu and Kashmir has been anything but easy. While the region has had an incredible music scene for centuries, I constantly faced challenges because of the lack of resources, infrastructure, and opportunities for musicians.
One of the primary struggles I encountered was finding instruments to practice and perform on. The cost of buying a musical instrument in Jammu and Kashmir is high, and often they were hard to find. I also had trouble getting access to professional recording studios with “state-of-the-art” equipment. I would have to make do with whatever gear I could find nearby or rent out rooms at a local music store for recording sessions.
Another challenge was the lack of support from local authorities. Aspiring upcoming musicians in Jammu and Kashmir need government approvals for their gigs and concerts, which are often hard to come by due to the administration’s lack of understanding about the work we do. There are also no financial grants available for young artists in this region which is why it’s essential that they look out for other sources of income while pursuing their passions.
My biggest obstacle however was mental – my own fear that my music won’t be accepted by my peers or acknowledged at a larger scale beyond Jammu & Kashmir. But as time passed by and I kept pushing forward despite all odds, I eventually managed to make a name for myself in India’s independent music scene with an ever-increasing fan base from around the world.
